It's complicated. Hilary Duff said she and estranged husband Mike Comrie are working out their relationship post-separation. The bubbly blonde updated Us Weekly on what's happening with the former NHL player, and co-parenting their 2-year-old son Luca, at the ASPCA Cocktail Party in Beverly Hills, Calif., Tuesday, May 6.
"I don't think Mike would ever go anywhere," Duff, 26, told Us
at the event. "I mean, we are really dedicated to taking care of Luca,
and we're really good friends who spend a lot of time together." Since announcing their split in January, the two have surprised fans by subsequently taking a "Modern Family" vacation together with their tot, and even rocking out, sans Luca, at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival last month.
"We're not in a rush for anything," the former Disney Channel star
explained. "So we're just trying to enjoy our lives and figure out what
makes us happy and it's working for us." Though the two aren't
technically back together, the parents remain open to seeing what
happens before possibly moving forward with their divorce.
"We have Luca as our main priority," Duff reiterated, "but we do care
a lot about each other. We're adults and we're making our way through
life. Sometimes you do that together and apart and we're gonna be and
we're going to do it in the most peaceful way possible."
The parents have had their hands full in recent months now that baby
Luca is a toddler! "He's two!" Duff gushed of her baby boy. "So he
definitely has a strong personality!" Laughing, she recalled, "He opened
his own door today, I couldn't believe it! I was like, 'Wow, when did
that happen?' Like when he can actually twist the doorknob and push the
door open?"
Duff added to Us that she empathizes with her "spirited" child. "He's
a little frustrated that he can't fully express what he wants," she
explained. "We're still telling him what to do at certain points of the
day when he's like, 'That's not what I want!' So I would say spirited
is a great word [to describe Luca]. For the most part he has a really
great demeanor. He loves to share and he's a kind kid."
Along with mommy-hood, Duff has also been busy helping big sister Haylie plan her upcoming wedding to Matt Rosenberg.
"Actually we just started," Duff revealed. "We don't have a date or
anything, but she's starting to throw out ideas for venues and she's
obsessed with Pinterest. It's exciting."
The Duff family, it turns out, approves of entrepreneur Rosenberg for 29-year-old Haylie. "We really love him," Hilary gushed to Us. "He's a great guy—his name is Matt—and we think it's going to be beautiful."

Hilary Duff: ‘I Feel Extremely Guilty’ as a Busy Working Mom
Stars get mommy guilt too! Hilary Duff certainly keeps busy with her work on TV Land’s Younger, but the former child star, now 28, also takes the time to focus on her most important role of all: mom.
In the new February 2016 cover story for Redbook, the single mother opened up about raising her son, Luca, 3, after filing for divorce in February 2015 from estranged husband Mike Comrie.
“It’s hard to say that you really can have it all,” she told the magazine. “I think you can to a certain degree, but fully loaded, pedal-all-the-way-down is tough. You’re missing out on something, either on the career or on the family. When I’m really busy with work, I feel extremely guilty.”
Family is always the priority for Duff, who hasn’t ruled out having more kids, married or not.
“I don’t want to say I wouldn’t get married again, but it’s not important to me,” she told Redbook. “I don’t feel I would need to be married to have another child. If I felt strongly enough toward someone or if someone felt strongly about it, I might say OK. But it’s not essential.”
Duff and hockey player Comrie, 35, wed in August 2010 and welcomed their son in March 2012. In January 2014, the couple announced that they would be separating, but have remained close, coparenting Luca.
On December 19, Duff Instagrammed a black-and-white pic of her growing boy, writing, “About to kisssssss this face right off.”
